Mr Feelgood can defend his Interdom title

New Image Media (CLICK TO VIEW)Canterbury harness racing trainer Tim Butt is starting to think Mr Feelgood can successfully defend his Watpac Inter Dominion crown in Sydney. After a frustrating start to this season, Mr Feelgood has turned the corner over the past two weeks.

The former North American star followed a win at Melton's Tabcorp Park on January 8 with a fantastic second in last Saturday night's Bendigo Cup.

"He's back on track," Butt beamed. "There have been some really encouraging signs in his last couple of runs and it's given us confidence in him again.

"His win at Melton was excellent then I thought he ran at least as well, maybe even better given how the race was run, at Bendigo.

"Sammy Maguire's a really nice horse and he dictated in front so our guy did a great job to make up so much ground in a quick last half."

Sammy Maguire's last 800m was a blistering 55.4sec and Mr Feelgood made up plenty of ground from back in the field for a close second.

"He just wasn't firing at home (NZ) in spring time, but he's kept on improving since we sent him across to Melbourne in late November," Butt said.

"He's really thriving and you're seeing it on the racetrack."

Butt said Mr Feelgood's next run would be in Saturday week's $125,000 Barastoc Grand Circuit Ballarat Cup followed by his defence of the $400,000 Barastoc Grand Circuit Hunter Cup at Moonee Valley on February 6.

"Then he's off to Sydney to prepare for the Inter heats," Butt said.

"I'm yet to finalise stabling for him because I'd like to be able swim him as part of his training.

"He's been doing that at Gavin's (Langs) place and I think it's been a big help."

Mr Feelgood created history on the Gold Coast last season when became the first North American import to win an Inter Dominion Final.

Sammy Maguire which is currently ranked 33rd for the Championship will certainly get a lift in his position when the third rankings are released next week.

Race Images (CLICK TO VIEW)Son of Christian Cullen too smart in Cup
Cullen’s Creek -
The well bred Cullen's Creek continued his advance through the harness racing grades with a stylish win in the Central Otago Trotting Cup (2600m mob) yesterday (Saturday - December 02) on the Omakau grass track in Central Otago.
The Tim Butt and Phil Anderson trained son of Christian Cullen, was taken to the front by leading driver Anthony Butt, from where he was able to dominate his opposition, eventually running out a comfortable 1 3/4 length winner over the Dean Taylor trained Pretty Dollylbird (Live Or Die), with a further 1/2 length away to the Robbie Holmes trained Biella Star (Mattuity). The overall time a handy 3.16.6, last 800 in 58.3 and the final 400 in 27.9 on the 1200m all weather circuit.
Cullen's Creek is from a family well known to the Butts, being out of Kahu del, he is a half brother to the well performed Swan Creek (Vance Hanover) 8 wins, and Harnett's Creek (Soky's Atom) 13 wins. And a close relation to arguably the greatest modern day standardbred of all time, Lyell Creek (Roydon Glen) 56 wins.
The stable produced another winner yesterday, with trotter Ronnie Coleman also grabing victory, this time in the hands of junior driver Chris Butt. Driven economically throughout, the son of Muscles Yankee was angled into the clear at the 300, and showed too much gas for his rivals, scoring easily by 5 1/4 lengths. Butt junior was registering win number six for the season, and is currently roughing it in the deep South as caretaker trainer for Butt/Anderson team.
Sleeping under the stars and living at one with nature, seems to be appealing to the young man as he settles in to his new enviroment...for the time being at least. "I've been staying at the Cromwell Racecourse since Boxing Day, Im in a tent, which is ok, cause there is plenty of other horseman staying here too. The meals are pretty simple and we are not far from the pub, so it's quite convenient," according to Butt. The 18 year old is in his second season of driving and has driven 13 winners to date.
The focused young horseman would love to qualify for the junior drivers championship, and just continue to drive winners as his short term goals. But he is getting a great deal of enjoyment from sharing in the ownership of exciting two year old filly, I Have A Dream, with Mum Karen. The classy daughter of Bettor's Delight was impressive at Winton beating horses of both sexes, and looks destined for better things to come. "She's beautifully gaited and has speed, so those attributes should help, we expect her to do a pretty good job."
I Have A Dream will race next in Auckland, where Chris Butt will continue his association with the filly. In the meantime, it's toasted sandwiches for tea at the Billy Heads caravan in preparation for Roxburgh tomorrow. But the young man on his wilderness adventure, will have till after Cromwell on January 7, before he gets to taste Mum's cooking again.

Interdominion champion Mr Feelgood has settled in well at his new home of Premier Stables in Canterbury, New Zealand.

After 8 weeks R&R at Tony Shaw's luxurious agistment farm in Cambridge, Mr Feelgood returned to training in the first week of June. Mr Feelgood has had several hopple runs to date as he prepares for the new season.

Trainer Tim Butt is delighted with his progress and condition, "He is a wonderful horse to have around the stable and is a pleasure to work with. Now that he is fully acclimatised, we are really looking forward to the new season with him."

Driver Anthony Butt who has been handling him in his work is also rapt with him, "He feels a million dollars in training and I can't wait for him to return to the racetrack."

Latest news from Premier Stables.
As the 2008/09 season draws to a close, the Premier Stables team can look back on a season that took them to the highest peaks of Harness Racing.
Winning the Holy Grail of the Sport in the 2009 Watpac Interdom Final with Mr Feelgood fufilled a lifetime ambition for Tim and Anthony Butt.

Both joined a very exclusive group of Kiwis to have won the Interdominion Pacers Final.

In adding the Interdom Pacers Final to his CV, Tim became the only trainer in history to have won the Big 6. That is both the Pacers and Trotters Interdom Finals, NZ and Auckland Cups, and Dominion Handicap and Rowe Cup.

Anthony joined the late Doody Townley and John Langdon in achieving the same feat of driving the winners of those 6 Races.

Mr Feelgood also won the $400 000 Big 6 AG Hunter Cup in Melbourne, and in doing so, took out 2 of the 3 richest races in Australia this season in Harness Racing.

The Hunter Cup win gave Tim his 2nd win in the race after Mister DG in 2004, and Anthony a record 4th win in the race.

Premier Stables runners earned just on a Million Dollars in Australia this season.

Stunin Cullen added to the season by winning the richest ever Derby held in NZ by romping away with the time honoured Woodlands Great Northern Derby, worth $600 000. He also won the Group 1 NRM Sires Stakes Final at Addington on Cup Day {$200 000}, The Elsu Classic {$70 000} and The PGG Wrightsons Sales Series Pace at Auckland[$250 000}. Stunin Cullen earned $696 744 for the season.

Report For Duty was placed in both the NZ and Hunter Cups, as well as winning the Kaikoura Cup. Roydon Flash and Tribute were other good winners for the Stable this season.

As we get into winter, there won't be many runners for the stable over the next couple of months.

Most of the big guns are back in work getting ready for the spring. Mr Feelgood, Report For Duty and Tribute will be set for the NZ Cup.

Stunin Cullen has gone for a well deserved spell following the Jewels, and won't be seen until later in the season.

Junior drivers to the fore at Nelson

Harnesslink News Room 06:05 PM 05-Jun-2009 NZT

It was no surprise to see champion junior driver Dexter Dunn driving a brace of winners in Pacific Fleet and Mossdale Claire at Richmond today but it was satisfying to see a couple of lesser known's Chris Butt and Kyle Cameron in the same ranks backing him up for the young brigade.

Butt, a distinctly promising son of standout driver Anthony Butt, showed tactical appreciation and competence beyond his years when he got his uncle Tim Butt's representative Chief Inanga home in the $12,000 Star and Garter Nelson Winter Cup Trial today.

Young Butt and Chief Inanga saved the day for the powerful Premier Stables of Butt and Phil Anderson that also put favourite Centre of Attention into the feature race, only to prejudice his chance with a tardy beginning.

Centre of Attention was driven by Chris's father Anthony, one of 17 drivers in the elite 1000 wins ranks in New Zealand.

Chris Butt showed immediate aptitude in New Zealand before gaining valuable experience in Australia and returning to New Zealand.

He revealed commendable horsemanship in getting Chief Inanga out of the trail and into the open to have a crack at Living Proof who looked the likely winner at the straight entrance.

Living Proof kicked on dourly but Chief Inanga had never spent a cent in the trail and gobbled him up easily over the last 150 metres.

Living Proof fought back courageously and will take all sorts of beating in the actual Winter Cup itself on Sunday.

Kyle Cameron did the right thing by his trainer father Ian of Fernside near Rangiora when he made no bones about winning with Motu Speedy Star.

Cameron jun, aged 23, had been based in Victoria, Australia, for 12 months with John Caldow, gaining two wins, and returned to his father's stable at Christmas.

Before going to Australia, Cameron scored with The Drunken Drummer in a junior race at Oamaru and scored at his first drive back from Australia with Galleon's Ambition at Westport on Boxing Day.

Cameron's father Ian told Harnesslink today that his son had gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Lincoln University near Christchurch and enjoyed his harness racing pursuits.

Cameron sen added that his latest winner was bought for $7500 at the Premier Yearling Sales by three associates who raced under the Opawa Racing Syndicate banner.

A Village Jasper 4 Year Old, Motu Speedy Star is closely related to Gr 3 winner Windshield Star who won the Leonard Memorial in Canterbury as a juvenile.

The winner's third dam Supreme Adios was an un-raced sister to standouts Bachelor Star, Main Star and Adios Bachelor as well as a half sister to Game Adios and Main Adios, most of whom won Derby classics.

American import wins Interdominion Final

The triumphant Butt brothers - Tim (left) and Anthony with their Interdominion spoils

Tim and Anthony Butt have won three Interdominion trotting championships but it was tonight's (Saturday) first pacing title that brought their greatest moment in harness racing. The Canterbury-based brothers both described former North American pacer Mr Feelgood's upset win at Parklands Rceway on the Gold Coast as the pinnacle of their careers.
"It doesn't get any better than this. I've had some great moments in the sulky especially with Lyell Creek and his Interdominion wins, but I think this surpasses them all. Actually I to be honest think it's one of the greatest moments in my life," said driver (Anthony) Butt immediately after Mr Feelgood's half-neck victory over crowd favourite and three-times Interdominion champion, Blacks A Fake.
Tim, who co-trains the Grinfromeartoear 6-year-old entire with Phil Anderson just south of Christchurch, said winning the $1m 2009 Interdominion title was his greatest training achievement.
"This is special considering we went looking to buy an American horse Down Under last September and thanks to the brilliant eye of Richard Norman, this fella became available. He became available and the rest is history.
"It's amazing what he's been through, but in that short time he has won the Shepperton and Hunter Cups and now an Interdominion final. I think of all the wins I've had as a trainer this is the greatest of them all," Butt (Tim) said.
Butt on behalf of the Solid Earth Syndicate, spearheaded by manager Kevin Seymour, paid $600,000 for the 2006 Little Brown Jug winner. When he was sold out of Kentucky he had raced 54 times for 18 wins, 16 placings and had won more than $1.04 million.
As a five-year-old Mr Feelgood paced a career-best 1min 49sec at The Meadowlands and contested many of North America's major races.
It was brilliant drive from Butt which ensured victory. Even his brother paid a tribute to his younger sibling.
"He certainly knows how to get them home when it counts. He's the man alright for the big Group One races. I'm proud of him."
Mr Feelgood settled near the rear from his second line (11) draw and it wasn't until the final 1200m that Butt made a move three-wide in behind the Greg Bennett driven Karloo Mick. In the home straight it became a three-horse war with Blacks a Fake (Natalie Rasmussen) attempting to lead throughout and Karloo Mick looming outside him.
At the top of the straight Butt elected to save ground and duck along the passing lane. That was the winning of the race. Mr Feelgood did just enough to get past Blacks A Fake pacing the 2609m mobile in 3:09.1 (mile rate: 1:56.7). Karloo Mick was 2.7 metres back in third with Changeover (David Butcher) six metres back in fourth.
Mr Feelgood's sectionals were: 29.2, 30, 28.5 and 29.1. He has now won 21 of his 61 starts and placed in18 others for just over $2.1m in career stakes.

Stunin Cullen wraps up Northern Derby

Harnesslink News Room 09:35 PM 06-Mar-2009 NZT

Tim Butt reaffirmed Stunin Cullen's status as the best 3-year-old he had trained following tonight's (Friday) Group One $600,000 Woodlands Northern Derby at Alexandra Park. The gifted colt left his opposition to it at the top of the straight winning easily by one-and-a-half lengths.

The talented son of Christian Cullen wasn't rushed early by driver Anthony Butt from his awkward second line draw but as they rounded the home bend for the second last time, Butt made a big mid-race move and nabbed the lead off stablemate Bus To Harland (Gavin Lang) with 1150m to go. From that point it was game over.

Butt (Tim) who co-trains Stunin Cullen with Phil Anderson, at Templeton praised the drive of his younger brother.

"He made a mid-race at exactly the right time. That was the winning of the race," Butt said.

Younger brother Butt returned the favour saying Tim and Phil were renowned for peaking their horses at exactly the right time.

"They done it again haven't they. It's a credit to them both. They said they would have him spot on for tonight and sure enough he felt extra. I thought he would be hard to beat once we got to the front," Butt (Anthony) said.

At the end of the 2700m Stunin Cullen had one and a half lengths to spare over Sleepy Tripp (Mark Purdon) with three quarters of a length back to roughie, Percy The Punter (Maurice McKendry). The winning time was 3:23.3 (mile rate: 2:01.2) with final 800m and 400m sectionals of 57.8 and 27.4 seconds.

Butt said Stunin Cullen would now have two starts left this season in the Group Two First Sovereign Flying Stakes on March 27 and the Group One New Zealand Derby on April 3. Both are at Addington Raceway

Mr Feelgood wins Big6 Hunter Cup

Harnesslink Admin 08:26 PM 08-Feb-2009 NZT

He's won the United States' biggest race and now Mr Feelgood has one of Australia's biggest features in the bag following a stirring win in Saturday night's $400,000 Group 1 BIG6 Hunter Cup at Moonee Valley.

The boom American import, winner of America’s iconic Little Brown Jug in 2006, showed that he was just as adept at the highest level halfway around the world when he claimed the 3065m marathon. A six-year-old by Australian time, the Grinfromeartoear entire justified the big money paid for him in the second half of last year with his second win from four Australian starts.

His other two runs were a respectable first-up sixth in the Group 2 Bendigo Cup and a narrow second to Mister Swinger in last week’s Group 1 Ballarat Cup.

Winning driver Anthony Butt, brother of Mr Feelgood’s trainer Tim, said the win was among his most satisfying and not just because he became the most successful reinsman in Hunter Cup history. “It was a big risk buying this horse (from America), it’s never been done before, but the owners backed their judgement and it’s a great thrill to get the job done,” he said.

The result was almost a replica of the Group 2 Shepparton Cup on January 24 – which Mr Feelgood won as a $42 chance – with the “Yank Tank” getting up in the final couple of bounds to pip gutsy Queensland gelding I Am Sam.

Mr Feelgood began safely from his 10m handicap and, just like at his standing start debut at Shepparton, was given time to settle before hitching a ride on Changeover’s back when the Kiwi star lead up the three-wide line a lap out.

As he did two weekends ago, Mr Feelgood ($7.60) peeled four-wide rounding the home bend and took almost every inch of the home straight to reel in I Am Sam but had his head in front when it mattered most.

On the line he had a half neck to spare over the $2.70 favourite with the winner’s stablemate Report For Duty ($59) filling third placing for the second year in a row, just a neck away. Every quarter was a sub-30-second split, including a 57-second last half of the last mile, for a 1:59.8 mile rate.

Changeover ($5.50), the fourth placegetter at Shepparton, filled that spot again with Mister Swinger ($17) flashing home to grab fifth money.

Butt, whose other Hunter Cup winning drives were aboard Blossom Lady (1994 and 1995) and Mister D G for his brother in 2004, said his fourth victory was possibly the sweetest.

“It’s the fourth time I’ve won it and it seems to get better every time,” he said. “I’ve driven some great horses and this guy is up there with the very best of them.”

Tim Butt feeling good about US import
Harnesslink News Room
05:55 PM 21-Jan-2009

Mr FeelgoodTim Butt is acutely aware of the gargantuan task Mr Feelgood faces in Saturday night's $50,000 Neatline Homes Shepparton Cup, but he couldn't be happier with the way the boom American import performed at his Australian debut.

In last Saturday night's Bendigo Cup, the Little Brown Jug winner finished a creditable sixth, beaten 4-1/2 metres, behind Kiwi superstar Changeover.

His New Zealand trainer deemed that a more than satisfactory return for the much-hyped import, who was brought to Australia to contest next month's Hunter Cup, sponsored by Tabcorp, en route to the Watpac Inter Dominion.

"That was his first race in six months and to finish a length and a half from them was quite good," Butt said. "We probably hoped that he was going to bounce away and beat them, but realistically that was never going to happen.

"He's come through the run really well and his coat's got a bit better, which means he's improved with the run, which is pretty much what we expected."

The Grinfromeartoear six-year-old, a winner of 18 races and $1.3 million in the US, will back up in this Saturday night's Group 2 event over 2690m, where he shares the daunting 30-metre backmark with Changeover.

Butt knows it will be difficult for the entire to defeat a field also including Bold Cruiser (20m), I Am Sam (20m), Manwarra Goforgold (10m) and frontmarkers Karlsruhe and Diamonds N Furs, but he doesn't really have a choice.

In order to be qualified for selection in the February 7 Hunter Cup at Moonee Valley, a horse must have begun safely in a standing start race within the past year. Being from the US, Mr Feelgood is yet to contest a standing start event.

"It's going to be pretty tough off 30 metres, but the main thing is to get him qualified from the standing start," Butt said.

"Off the 30 (metres), by the time he catches them up it's going to be halfway through the race, so he's going to find it hard to win from there but at least we're happy with him."

The Neatline Homes Shepparton Cup is race seven on Saturday night's nine-event program and will be run at 9.30pm.
